UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions (Peppers) says you can buy transplants or start seed, and to start indoors: small seed is easily washed away if sown in the garden. What belongs in the first tray

Three searches cover the tray itself: pepper seed, a seed-starting tray, and a bag of mix. UF/IFAS Starting Transplants Indoors is the indoor-start page (4 to 8 weeks before the outdoor date). UF/IFAS Hot Peppers says containers later should use well-drained potting media. Penn State Extension Master Gardeners (Adams County) prefer a light, soilless mixture formulated for seed starting, and say all-purpose potting mixes can work if the seed is not overwatered. Clemson HGIC Starting Seeds Indoors tells gardeners to avoid bagged topsoil and, on that page, potting mixes for starting seeds. We report the hosts. This kit still offers a potting-mix search because IFAS names potting media for containers; a seed-starting mix search sits next to it for the first cells.

Order of operations (cited, not a house log)

  1. Tray + mix. Fill cells with soilless seed-starting mix if you follow Penn State MG / Clemson; potting media if you are reading IFAS’s later container sentence. Not garden soil.
  2. Sow pepper seed. IFAS Peppers: start indoors because small seed washes away in the garden. Names on this hub: jalapeño, habanero, datil, cayenne, serrano.
  3. Warmth until they germinate. IFAS names peppers as a warm-soil crop; a horticultural heat mat may help if germination is low. That is heat, not light.
  4. Then light or a sill. Read grow light vs windowsill before buying a fixture. Rotate a south/west sill; overhead LED/fluorescent if more than a dozen cells or no such window.
  5. Out on the bulletin window. HS732 Central Florida: January to March and August to September. IFAS 4 to 8 weeks back from that date is the indoor lead. Hardening-off is lighter if the overhead light sat close (IFAS transplants page).

Worked example. Five named peppers vs IFAS’s dozen. This catalog lists five varieties. One cell of each is five seedlings: under a dozen, so a true south or west sill (rotated) is still the IFAS windowsill path. Four cells of each is twenty: over a dozen, so IFAS already suggested an overhead light. Count cells before you shop a fixture. That count is not a harvest from this garden.

Grow lights. Only if they belong

IFAS Starting Transplants Indoors: you can start on a windowsill; overhead fluorescent or LED belongs if you have more than a dozen seedlings, or if you lack a south- or west-facing window. Read grow light vs windowsill before adding a fixture to this kit. A single tray on a true south or west sill, rotated every couple of days, is the IFAS windowsill path. Do not add a light as filler.

Not in this kit

  • Cages. UF/IFAS Peppers mentions staking once fruit weighs the plant down. That is a later step, not a first-tray item.
  • Heat mats are named on the IFAS transplants page for warm-season germination (peppers included) if germination is low. Optional, not a required third of this kit.
